The Openbox X5 is a gadget that will significantly change the way you watch television. The two main features are that it allows you to use your phone as the remote, and it has a built in Chromecast. This means that you can download apps or movies from your phone onto your TV, so for example if someone tells me there’s a new episode of Game of Thrones on HBO NOW, I can just download it right away to my TV with one tap on my cell phone! There are other more minor benefits too, like being able to change channels by swiping downward on the touch screen. You can also upgrade the firmware on it which is super easy, and allows you to add features like live TV. Openbox X5 Firmware While the Openbox X5 was pretty good out of the box, there were a few things that were a little annoying or broken. It would for example be nice if the channel list showed more than 10 channels. After doing some research I found that there was a way to upgrade its firmware using a Windows PC, so I decided to do it! It only took about 10 minutes and now my new gadget is even better! Here’s what I did: Download this file from Nexxus's website Extract the . rar file. The firmware file will be in the "binaries/x5" folder. If you don't have 7zip installed, do so here. I'm using Windows 8.1, but it should work on Windows 7 and 10 too. Plug in the Openbox X5 to your computer with a MicroUSB cable (supplied). It should briefly light up green to indicate that it's connected. Start the Firmware Updater by unzipping it and running "FirmwareUpdater". It will scan for connected devices automatically after starting, which only takes a few seconds. The Openbox X5 should show up in the list of connected devices found. If it doesn't, try using the MicroUSB cable to plug it in. If the Openbox X5 doesn't show up at all, double click on "FirmwareUpdater" and select "Start Scan" so it can search for connected devices again. Click on Update button and select one of the stable firmwares available. It's recommended to update firmware to version 1.3, but I used 1. 5.7 as it already had a lot of feature updates from version 1.2 on. Select desired software to update on the next window, and click Update on the bottom right once you're all set. Hold down the home button on the Openbox X5 for a few seconds until a box pops up asking "Do you want to continue?". If you do, click on Continue button and let it do its thing! The Openbox X5 should now be updated to version 1.5. cfa1e77820
